WBSSC: Over 5 lakh candidates have applied so far for 35,726 assistant teacher posts in government and government-aided schools in West Bengal, a senior official said on Thursday. To ease the process, an online application portal was launched on June 16, the last date for which has been extended from July 14 to July 21.
"The number of applicants has already crossed 5 lakh. We expect the number to increase further," West Bengal School Service Commission chairman Siddhartha Majumdar said.
On May 30, the West Bengal School Service Commission issued a notification for the recruitment of 35,726 assistant teachers in classes 9-12 in state-aided and government schools, following the Supreme Court's direction. The apex court had asked the state government to file a compliance affidavit on starting the recruitment process on or before May 31.
In April, the Supreme Court had completely cancelled the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) recruitment panel and set aside 25,753 appointments of class 9-12 teachers as well as Group C and Group D employees.
Over 3 lakh candidates had applied for teaching jobs in the 2016 SSC recruitment exams, another SSC official said.
Following the apex court’s April order, the West Bengal School Service Commission had identified 15,403 of the 17,206 teachers as “not found to be particularly tainted”, allowing them to continue receiving salaries till December. The remaining 1,804 teachers have been barred from returning to schools.
Earlier this month, the Calcutta High Court had dismissed appeals by the West Bengal School Service Commission and the state government seeking permission to allow “ineligible” candidates to participate in the new recruitment process.
