Chelsea star Wesley Fofana has opened up about life at Stamford Bridge, admitting he 'considered leaving' in the recent summer window.

Despite only joining the club two years ago, Fofana is one of the longest-serving members in the Chelsea dressing room, such has been the volume of new arrivals since.

However, having endured two injury-ridden seasons, the Frenchman's time on the pitch for the Blues has been limited, with Fofana having made just 23 appearances since the summer of 2022.

It isn't how things were meant to play out for the defender, who arrived as part of a mega-money move from Leicester City.

As a result of the £70million man's frustrations at Chelsea, Fofana recently admitted he considered a move away from the club this summer.

Speaking to French outlet Free Foot, the 23-year-old commented: "I had a conversation that really touched me. I would be lying if I said I didn't weigh it up. It was from [Medhi] Benatia, Marseille's sporting director.

"It touched me and I think everyone knows why. I thought about it but there you go, the current objective is to succeed at Chelsea, to try and play regularly, and to establish myself at my club.

"But OM, we'll see one day. I still have a contract until 2029 and we'll see after that. I have never hidden it, [Marseille] is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter.

"We'll see if I end up being at Marseille in a few years, or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career."

Establishing himself in the first team will be Fofana's maiden objective, but the early signs have been positive for the former Saint-Etienne star.

Fofana has started all three of Chelsea's Premier League matches so far this term, with the centre-back seemingly fancied by new boss Enzo Maresca in the heart of defence.

However, Fofana won't be involved in European competition for Chelsea, at least not in the first half of the campaign, after he, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia were left out of the Blues' Conference League squad for the 'League Phase'.

The official line was so Chelsea can manage the trio's load, with the two-time European champions having the potential to play in as many as five competitions this season.

Chelsea have three home matches in the competition against Gent, FC Noah and Shamrock Rovers, before travelling to Panathinaikos, Heidenheim and Astana.
