The latest series of All Creatures Great and Small marked the highly anticipated return of Tristan Farnon, a character dear to the hearts of fans. At the end of season three, Tristan had left Darrowby to serve in the Second World War.

Although his absence was deeply felt in the Channel 5 drama, his role was swiftly taken over by student vet Richard Carmody, who lent a helping hand to Siegfried Farnon and James Herriot at the practice.

However, Tristan's initial encounter with his replacement upon returning to the village was far from seamless.

James Anthony-Rose, the actor who plays Carmody, revealed that it's been delightful to witness the unfolding dynamic between the two characters, reports .

He commented: "Tristan coming home and being met by this curious character, Richard Carmody."

"They're like polar opposites in one sense, because Tristan is very good at putting a lot of energy into relaxing whereas Carmody, I describe him as sort of like a precision tool. He puts a lot of energy into his work, and then probably relaxes by doing a little bit more hard work whether that's studying for these exams, or whatever it might be."

The Channel 5 star pointed out that the two characters, despite being positive and negative in their own ways, manage to look beyond their differences.

He further added: "That relationship was really nice to play as well with Cal (Callum Woodhouse), who, of course, I had not met or worked with in the last series, and he is such a joy to work with.

"And he's so in that character, so I felt very comfortable. It was great fun dancing around each other with those scenes not quite knowing how they're going to get on with each other."

The most recent episode saw the young vet receive a smashing set of exam results, snagging a distinction that left James and Siegfried pondering whether to offer him a permanent position.

Carmody, however, was torn between his blooming rural veterinary career and an alluring chance to join a high-profile project in the bustling heart of London.

Although his heart seemed tethered to Darrowby, Siegfried, in a touching demonstration of selflessness, made it clear that Carmody would always have a home at Skeldale House.

As the episode wrapped up, tensions were high as Carmody announced his big decision to take on the capital, with just 10 days to prepare for his departure.

Tristan attempted light-hearted relief, bantering about reclaiming his bed, but the heavy hearts were palpable, especially from Siegfried, as the realisation that Carmody was spreading his wings.

Will Carmody make a comeback in the next season?

All Creatures Great and Small continues on Thursdays on Channel 5 from 9pm.
