BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt interrupts schedule for sad breaking news announcement

BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt was compelled to interrupt the programme following the tragic news of comedian Janey Godley's passing.

The 63 year old, who had been battling ovarian cancer, had updated her social media followers just weeks prior, revealing that her condition was terminal and she "didn't know if she'd see this year".

Tragically, it was announced that the Scottish star had passed away with her family and loved ones by her side, prompting Charlie to pause the show to deliver the heartbreaking news. Following the announcement, a tribute to Janey was aired on , celebrating her career, time in the limelight and her brave fight against cancer, reports .

In September, Janey had to cancel her Why Is She Still Here? tour after announcing she was receiving palliative care following her cancer diagnosis. The comedian gained fame after her dubbed video of Nicola Sturgeon's Covid briefings went viral online, and she confirmed in November 2021 that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

On Saturday, (November 2) her manager Chris David announced that she had died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones, stating: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our client Doctor Janey Godley on 2 November."

He went on to say: "Janey died peacefully in the wonderful Prince and Hospice in Glasgow surrounded by her loved ones. She will be hugely missed by her family, friends and her many fans."

"She will be remembered for her legendary voiceovers of Nicola Sturgeon during the pandemic, her hilarious and outspoken comedy, but most of all for just being 'Janey'."

In 2022, the stand-up comic shared that she'd been given the all-clear after undergoing a hysterectomy and a postoperative scan showed "no evidence of disease".

After receiving this positive news, plans were made for her to return to touring, but just before Christmas 2022, the Scottish star revealed her cancer had returned and that the tour "may be her last".

However, shortly after in an interview with STV News, she heartbreakingly confirmed her cancer was now "treatable but not curable", with doctors later advising that she should stop working "for the foreseeable future".

The tour was subsequently cancelled and days later Janey returned to social media with an emotional video, telling fans she was receiving end-of-life care, as she filmed from her hospice bed.
