BBC Ludwig ending explained: Does John get uncovered by police?

Send Push

David Mitchell's Ludwig is drawing to a close on BBC One, but the finale is already available on . Fans will have seen the comic actor impersonate his twin brother DCI James Taylor in a bid to probe his sudden disappearance and abrupt departure from his family.

However, John 'Ludwig' Taylor transitioned from crafting puzzles to cracking murder cases and proved to be quite the detective. As the comedy-drama rolls into its sixth episode, it was revealed that John was delving into potential police corruption and a possible cover-up.

James' spouse Lucy (played by Anna Maxwell Martin) is also hot on the trail and a phone call could land her in deep water.

Audiences will be left pondering how the storylines unfolded in the finale, specifically whether John was exposed as an imposter and if he discovered what happened to his brother James?

Did police find out John's real identity?

After masquerading as James and solving murders, John admitted to Russell that he wasn't actually his twin. Lucy had been taken into custody in relation to Holly's murder and the police IT technician alleged she and James were engaged in an affair.

Simon disclosed that he had eavesdropped on Holly conversing with John - whom she thought was James - about their affair. This suddenly provided Lucy with a plausible motive to murder Holly and Russell grilled John about this allegation during a police interview.

John, at a loss for words, conceded he wasn't James and confessed his twin brother had gone missing. John spent the night in a police cell while the team probed Holly's death.

Lucy was finally vindicated in Holly's murder, while John had to sign James's resignation papers so it seemed James remained an employee until then, scrubbing John's own misdeeds.

John got recruited back into the force as a "lateral thinking consultant" for Cambridgeshire police owing to his knack for cracking cases.

What happened to Holly and Lucy? image

Holly met her end at Adam's hands after he discovered she was skimming way above their agreed 50/50 cut from joint earnings. Both inside scoop merchant and blackmailer, Holly leveraged classified police intel, tipping off targets of investigations and milking money from bent coppers.

Moreover, Holly knew John wasn't the real James and plotted to coerce Lucy with this ace up her sleeve. It was terrible timing when Lucy popped by Holly's place, walking straight into a murder scene whilst on the hunt for clues about James.

Lucy's name was cleared of Holly's killing once it turned out 'boyfriend' Adam fatally stabbed Holly in her flat. Adam had exited via the kitchen island, and switched Lucy's knife with the murder weapon.

James is revealed to be alive and well, but there's a long backstory.

Holly had sold information to former journalist, blogger and conspiracy theorist Roger Sinclair and it is unknown what information she sold, and all of Sinclair's articles had been scrubbed from the internet.

Following Sinclair's death, James was first on the scene and he and his partner Matt (Karl Pilkington) were taken off the case. A new team covered up his death and James strongly believed this was a professional hit on Sinclair's life.

James wanted to continue investigating the death and Carol told him to stop. Matt left his job and went into hiding while James disappeared and told Lucy to hand in his resignation.

John received a voicemail from his twin brother revealing he never guessed John would have impersonated him and he only disappeared so he can investigate Sinclair's death and escape his unhappy home life.

James claimed he was like their absent father and called himself the bowerbird, something James would never do. John realised that James was lying and led the team to a bird book and later a storage unit full of Sinclair's items.

John believed one of the conspiracy theories Sinclair had been researching must have been true, and important enough to kill him over. As the trio investigated the case, James watched on from the darkness.
