The New York Jets' acquisition of Davante Adams doesn't bode well for Mike Williams, especially after Aaron Rodgers publicly criticised the receiver for a route error.
In the Monday Night game where the Jets were edged out 23-20 by the Buffalo Bills at home, , but also threw a crucial late interception which he attributed to a mistake by Williams.
Attempting a long pass to Williams on the outside, the receiver had to adjust mid-flight, resulting in cornerback Taron Johnson intercepting the ball, leading to a decisive moment in the game. Rodgers, visibly upset on the sidelines right after the incident, later explained to journalists: "We [were supposed to have] two verticals. Allen's [Lazard] down the seam, Mike's [Williams] down the red line [sideline go-route].

"I'm looking at Allen, he puts his hand up, three guys go with him. So, I'm throwing a no-look to the red line. When I peek my eyes back there [Williams] is running an in-breaker. It's gotta be down the red line."
Rodgers essentially pointed the finger at Williams, who was supposed to run a go-route but instead forced the quarterback to change his throw late in the motion, resulting in an interception. This mistake by Williams may have been the last straw, as the Jets have since completed a blockbuster trade for Adams - a familiar and favourite target of Rodgers.
Adams had been rumoured to be leaving the Las Vegas Raiders for a while, with speculation increasing after he sustained a hamstring injury. On Tuesday, the Jets secured the All-Pro in exchange for a conditional third-round pick that could become a second-rounder.
Adams is a three-time All-Pro and two-time receiving touchdowns leader, making him one of the top offensive weapons in football. Despite trade rumours linking him to the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, and Bills, the Jets swooped in and Adams joined the likes of Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, and Williams in the receiver room.
Ultimately, the Jets now boast a strong receiving corps on paper. Wilson is the franchise's star receiver while Lazard - another ex-Green Bay Packers receiver who has a connection with Rodgers - has been in outstanding form, scoring five touchdowns in six weeks this season, including a spectacular Hail Mary against the Bills.
On the other hand, Williams has been having a tough time. With only 10 catches for 145 yards, he's mostly Rodgers' fourth or fifth choice. The arrival of Adams is likely to push him further down the list. The Jets, currently at 2-4, are set to face the 4-2 Steelers on Sunday, Oct. 20.
