Man Utd legend Paul Scholes gives clear verdict on decision to axe Sir Alex Ferguson

Paul Scholes has hit out at decision to terminate 's ambassadorial contract, branding the move as "distasteful".

The legendary Scot, 86, had transitioned into a role as a global ambassador after ending his 26-year tenure back in 2013. The role is believed to have been worth £2.13million-a-year.

It emerged earlier this month that Ineos chief informed Ferguson in a meeting as the club continue in their bid to cut costs.

Ratcliffe's decision has split opinion among the fanbase and several former United stars - and , who came through the ranks during Ferguson's tenure, is less than impressed with the move.

Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of United's match with Fenerbahce in the , Scholes said: “I thought it was a little bit distasteful for what that man has done for the club. Almost a little bit disrespectful but they're new owners and new owners makes changes and they think what they're doing is best for the club.

“If they think they can save whatever money I know it's been talked about £2million, if they think they can use it elsewhere then so be it. This club owes a lot to Sir . It's where it is now mainly because of the success he had for so many years.

“The timing of it was poor because you think they're in a really bad run of form, could you have waited or done it before the season started, at the end of the season.

“The publicity wasn't great around but Sir Alex Ferguson will be fine he will go on and still be the best ambassador the club has had.”

Former manager , now bossing Fenerbahce, was also asked for his views on the decision ahead of Thursday night's fixture with his former club.

He said: “My relationship with Sir Alex was amazing, incredible. When my documentary comes out you will know more about the reason I have so much respect for him.

“The ambassadorial role. I don’t know the situation, it doesn’t matter why, it doesn't matter what. Sir Alex has the most important thing, which is the love and respect of every Manchester United fan around the , that is more important than the ambassadorial role. It's more important than a few pounds that he can make and he doesn’t need. The most important thing is the love and respect.”
