Reece James has sent a defiant message after returning to Chelsea training. The club captain, who hasn't played since May due to injury and suspension, finally got back out onto the grass with his teammates earlier this week.
Following yet another fitness setback, this time picked up during pre-season, He had been banned for the opening three Premier League games regardless, but could have featured in the Conference League play-off ties had he been in a better physical state.
Now under Enzo Maresca, James is entering his second season as captain. He will be aiming to improve on what has been a frustrating few years though.
James only started five Premier League games last term as he was once more hampered by injuries. It came after his struggle of a 2022/23 season which was reduced to 16 league appearances in total as well.
He hasn't been at his best now for almost two years since an initial knee injury whilst playing for Thomas Tuchel. Getting back to work at Cobham will be a major personal boost for James
24 hours later he was back for more. This time honing in on a leg tattoo, James simply uploaded the words on his right shin.

"I just didn't quit", the tattoo reads. James has previously opened up on the mental pain he has gone through whilst being in the treatment room rather than on the pitch.
This time round, the 24-year-old will be keen to put his problems behind him as he ramps up work towards a first outting of the season.
Maresca will give an update on James' state of readiness, as well as that of the rest of his squad, later this week ahead of the match. He usually speaks to the media on Fridays.
