Netflix's hit series Squid Game made its debut on the streaming service back in 2021 and swiftly became a global phenomenon.

The South Korean show introduced viewers to down-on-his-luck father Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) who found himself sucked into a deadly competition alongside 455 other players, all vying to win a 45.6 billion won cash prize.

Fans have now faced a three-year wait for Season 2, which will finally be released on the streamer on December 26. Squid Game's third and final season will premiere in 2025.

Tonight (October 31), released its much-anticipated Season 2 trailer which showed Seong's efforts to change the game from the inside. In the footage, the character is seen re-entering the game and attempting to lead a rebellion against its shady creators.

According to Season 2's synopsis: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won."

Fans have flocked to the teaser trailer to share their thoughts on the upcoming series.

"This feels so much more intense than the first season now that we know everything," wrote one eager viewer. Another shared: "Gi-hun really said he's ready to get traumatised and watch more people die again rather than see his own daughter lmao."

A third fan added: "Can’t wait for this absolute fire," while another said: "This trailer looks super promising, we will be seated."

"This is Netflix’s greatest show ever!" gushed a series fan underneath the teaser, while one joked: "My man really walked into those games again like 'Ah s****… here we go again'.”

Hinting at what was to come in Season 3, Squid Game's writer, director and exec producer told fans they could expect a showdown between fan favourite Seong Gi-hun and Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), one of the mysterious managers behind the lethal game. He shared in an open letter: “The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

Squid Game was such a success that Netflix even released a reality show in 2023 that faithfully recreated the sets and the games from the series, titled Squid Game: The Challenge. A second season has been given the green light.

Meanwhile, an English language Squid Game spin-off - helmed by acclaimed director David Fincher - is reportedly in the works. According to Deadline the series could land as early as 2025.
