There has been a major twist in the long-running dispute over Real Money Games (RMG) in India. Tech giant Google has proposed to allow all legitimate real-money games on the Google Play Store. This step has been taken after the investigation of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Its purpose was to review Google's discriminatory policies in the online gaming sector.
Google sent a proposal
Google has sent a proposal to the CCI under the 'Play Commitment Proposal' and 'Ads Commitment Proposal'. It states that this policy change will ensure access to the Google Play and Google Ads platforms to RMG apps that comply with all the rules.
This will promote competition in the market and eliminate the situation of unfair advantage to any one class. Google said that it will place all self-declared legitimate RMGs on Google Play by Indian laws and guidelines. Along with this, Google is also developing a new business model for the developers of RMG, which will take care of their business needs and transparency.
Let us tell you that in November 2024, Winzo Games Pvt Ltd filed a complaint with the CCI, alleging that Google only allows select games like Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and Rummy on Google Play, while other real money games are excluded. The CCI found in its investigation that this behavior is against the rules of competition and hinders the entry of new app developers into the market. Agency
What are real money games?
Real money games are online games in which users participate using money and have a chance to win or lose money according to the result. Some RMGs in India are recognized as skill-based, such as rummy and fantasy sports, while luck-based games are usually regulated by state governments.
