Amazon has officially launched its first color e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft, following years of development aimed at creating a more immersive reading experience. The new device is priced at $280, positioning it between other devices on the market, which range from $149 to $330. According to a company statement, the Colorsoft utilizes LEDs and other technologies to achieve its color display.
Key Features of the Kindle Colorsoft
In past attempts, Amazon focused on developing color e-readers using eInk technology, which powers its standard Kindles and is known for requiring minimal battery power. However, the Colorsoft boasts a battery life of approximately eight weeks, shorter than the three months offered by the latest generation of the Paperwhite e-reader.
Alongside the Colorsoft, Amazon has introduced a new version of its Paperwhite e-reader featuring a 7-inch screen that is two-tenths of an inch larger than the previous generation. Additionally, an updated Kindle Scribe has been unveiled, allowing users to write on the screen with a stylus and convert their handwritten notes into more legible text. The company noted that users' in-book notations can be summarized by artificial intelligence software that can transform pages of notes into bullet points.
Amazon's Dominance in the E-Reader Market
Amazon continues to dominate the e-reader market, commanding over three-quarters of the market share, by various measures. The company has built its reputation on creating durable devices, stating that it sells them at close to cost, making a profit primarily from the sale of books and other reading materials.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the use of e-readers, as many libraries remained closed while offering wireless downloads of e-books. This trend has sustained interest in Kindle devices, especially during promotional events like Prime Day when discounts are often offered.
The Kindle Colorsoft is set to ship to customers on October 30, and the updated Kindle Scribe will ship on December 4.
