Bengaluru prepares for heavy downpour as IMD issues yellow alert across 11 districts

Send Push
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and 11 districts in Karnataka on Saturday, October 19, with heavy rainfall expected to continue until October 24. According to the IMD, "residents in Bengaluru will wake up to a generally cloudy sky, accompanied by rain and thunderstorms" for the next seven days.

Rising Water Levels and Traffic Disruptions in Bengaluru
The heavy rain that started early on Saturday morning caused significant traffic disruptions in various parts of Bengaluru. Some areas were hit by heavy downpours, while others experienced lighter drizzles, according to reports by the Indian news agency IANS. The rain has already led to widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas, and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) deployed tractors to help residents in an apartment complex affected by the floods. Local tech hub Manyata Tech Park, which houses several major companies, was also submerged.

Heavy Rain Extends to Coastal Karnataka
The yellow alert extends to the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, where "heavy winds have been creating near-cyclonic conditions," as reported by IANS. Tourists and locals in these regions have been advised to stay indoors, while all adventure and water-based activities have been suspended until further notice. Authorities have warned against visiting beaches as a safety precaution.

Significant Rainfall Recorded in Bengaluru
Typically, Bengaluru sees around 5 mm of rain during this period of the year, but on October 15, the city recorded a dramatic 65 mm of rainfall—an increase of 228%, leading to widespread flooding. More than 140 localities across the city reported water entering homes, and at least 30 trees were uprooted. In a similar pattern, the IMD forecasts that the maximum temperature in the city will hover around 28 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 20 degrees Celsius for the next few days. The city is expected to experience light rains on October 22, followed by more consistent downpours on October 23 and 24.

Weather Warnings Across Karnataka
In its daily weather bulletin, the IMD predicted that "heavy rainfall is expected over north interior Karnataka between October 19 and 22, south interior Karnataka from October 19 to 23, and coastal Karnataka on October 22 and 23." Bengaluru, along with other affected districts, is expected to see similar weather patterns over the coming days, raising concerns about flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and buildings located near lake beds.

Authorities on High Alert for More Rainfall
With the possibility of more heavy rain on Sunday, October 20, authorities have been placed on high alert. Specific emergency measures have been arranged to handle potential flooding and other rain-related hazards. According to the IMD, residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay cautious as more downpours are expected to hit over the next several days.

Bengaluru, Karnataka's capital and IT hub, is no stranger to heavy rains during the monsoon season. However, this year, rainfall has significantly exceeded the usual levels. The city's infrastructure, particularly in low-lying areas, has struggled to cope with the sudden spike in water levels, resulting in localized flooding.

With temperatures expected to remain in the range of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius, residents are advised to take precautions as the heavy rain persists through the week. The recent surge in rainfall has also raised concerns about drainage systems and flood preparedness in both urban and coastal areas.
