Delhi is bracing for more rain and strong winds on Friday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the national capital.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h are expected, with the IMD advising residents to remain cautious and prepared for possible disruptions.
As per the forecast, the capital will see partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall likely in various parts of the city through the day.
Thursday showers offer little respite from humidity
On Thursday evening, parts of Delhi received light rain under overcast skies, offering minimal relief from the hot and humid weather. Roads such as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Marg were seen glistening after the showers, though the intensity remained low.
The Regional Meteorological Centre had issued a yellow alert for lightning, thunderstorms and squalls across Delhi during the day.
The alert was upgraded to orange for Friday, signalling potentially impactful weather conditions.
The IMD categorises a yellow alert as a warning for minor weather changes, while an orange alert points to severe weather that could disrupt normal life.
Delhi AQI in moderate range
Despite the showers and cloud cover, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category. As per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 151 as of 4 PM on Wednesday.
With unstable weather and strong winds expected today, Delhi-NCR residents are advised to stay indoors during peak weather activity, avoid parking under trees or near weak structures, and stay updated through official weather bulletins.
Meanwhile, the IMD reported that the southwest monsoon advanced further into parts of eastern and northeastern India on Thursday. It has now covered more areas of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, the northern Bay of Bengal, all of the northeastern states, and the entire region of Sikkim.
"Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some more parts of West Bengal and Bihar during the next one to two days," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.
Stormy weather across India this week
Across India, widespread stormy weather has been observed over the past couple of days. On Wednesday, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated locations in Konkan and Goa, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and parts of Karnataka. Similar heavy rains also affected northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
Thunderstorms with gusty or squally winds ranging from 40 to 80 km/h were reported in several states including Tamil Nadu, East Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. According to the IMD, hailstorms were observed at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, while dust storms occurred in parts of western Rajasthan.
Citing IMD forecasts, ANI reported that parts of Assam are also likely to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next two to three days.
