Observing that it will "not dislocate the trial", the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a plea seeking to transfer the trial of rape and murder of a 31-year-old medic at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital out of West Bengal.
A bench, headed by the CJI, made it clear that SC will "not shift the trial" out of West Bengal. "We cannot cast aspersion(s) on our own judiciary... We are not going to stop the trial at all... We cannot dislocate the investigation (being carried out by CBI)", the CJI verbally observed.
The request was made by a lawyer appearing before the bench. He claimed the "people of West Bengal are losing faith in the police and judiciary". But the argument failed to cut ice with the bench which orally advised the lawyer to refrain from indulging in "canteen gossip".
CBI REPORT PERUSED
The bench also also perused the sixth status report of CBI. Refraining from sharing the findings, it said that probe is continuing. Posting the matter for November 11, SC sought an updated report from CBI after four weeks. CBI is also investigating alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. In a related development, SC-appointed National Task Force to examine the larger issues of safety and dignity of medical professionals submitted its report.
