The recent local bodies elections in Uttarakhand have rung alarm bells for the BJP. Out of 358 Zila Panchayat seats, independents bagged 128, BJP got 124, and Congress 106.
While BJP leaders claim many independents are party-aligned, insiders admit that public anger-especially against sitting MLAs-was palpable. In some cases, villagers reportedly barred their MLAs from entering.
Several kin of BJP legislators lost their contests, signalling voter discontent. The Congress, rejuvenated by the outcome, believes this marks the beginning of its revival. "We will revive the party in the next six months," said Congress leader Harish Rawat. With assembly elections due in 2027, the results are being seen as the first signs of voter fatigue for the ruling BJP in the hill state. The party is now working on a corrective strategy to regain lost ground.
