Who is Imaan Mazari-Hazir? The lawyer who had called Pakistan army 'terrorists' arrested again

Send Push
Imaan Mazari-Hazir, a prominent human rights lawyer and outspoken critic of Pakistan's military establishment, has made headlines once again following her arrest by Islamabad police on multiple charges. Known for her stance on issues of human rights and her vocal criticism of the military’s alleged involvement in state repression, Mazari has frequently come under scrutiny and faced legal battles due to her activism.

Imaan Mazari Background and Activism

As per BBC, born into a politically active family, Imaan Mazari is the daughter of Shireen Mazari, a former human rights minister under the government of ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan. Imaan Mazari's legal career, marked by her inclination towards human rights, has focused on advocating for religious and ethnic minorities and seeking justice for victims of state violence. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh Law School, she has long been involved in cases that challenge state institutions and call for accountability for alleged abuses.

Mazari's confrontations with the state have drawn both admiration and controversy. In August 2023, she made a speech at a rally organized by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), during which she condemned the military’s actions, accusing it of enabling violence against civilians and exercising undue power over civilian institutions. She went as far as describing certain members of the military establishment as “the real terrorists,” remarks that led to her immediate arrest on charges of sedition and terrorism, as per BBC.

Recent Arrests and Legal Challenges

Mazari’s recent arrest with her husband, Hadi Ali, stems from an alleged altercation with Islamabad traffic police while removing road blockades meant for an international cricket team’s convoy. Police reports suggest that Mazari and her husband interfered with state operations, which police claimed posed a “security risk.” This arrest comes after Mazari was detained on similar charges of "interference in state affairs" in 2023. She was subsequently released on bail but has since faced repeated legal confrontations.

Mazari’s re-arrest attracted further public outcry after she was initially granted bail by the court. Her lawyer claimed authorities did not provide an arrest warrant nor explain the charges. According to BBC, Mazari’s mother, Shireen Mazari, expressed frustration over what she described as a “gross violation of legal procedures,” alleging that security personnel had forcibly entered their residence, seized Imaan’s personal belongings, and detained her without due process.

Public Reactions and Human Rights Concerns

Last year, Mazari’s arrests sparked significant concern from human rights organizations and activists. Human Rights Watch and other groups denounced the use of broad anti-terrorism laws to suppress dissenting voices. Prominent activists like Nida Kirmani also voiced their opposition, describing the arrests as part of an increasing crackdown on civil liberties in Pakistan.

Many analysts see Mazari’s legal battles as reflective of a wider crackdown on freedom of expression in Pakistan, particularly in light of political instability and economic difficulties.
