Maintaining cleanliness is a good habit, but when it becomes excessive and begins to affect daily life, it can be a sign of a mental health problem. This condition is called obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It can occur not only in adults but also in children.
What is OCD?
OCD is a mental disorder in which a person has recurring unwanted thoughts (obsessions), such as a fear of dirt or the risk of infection. To relieve these thoughts, the person repeatedly cleans or washes their hands (compulsions). This habit gradually becomes so intense that it begins to affect studies, work, and social life.
Symptoms of OCD in Children
Repeatedly washing hands until the skin becomes dry.
Insistence on keeping things in perfect order.
Extreme fear of dirt or illness.
Repeatedly checking doors, locks, or gas.
Repeatedly repeating or counting the same task over and over.
If your child is so preoccupied with cleanliness that they stop playing, studying, or meeting friends, it could be a sign of OCD.
Causes
Genetic factors – Having a family member with OCD increases the risk.
Chemical imbalances in the brain, especially serotonin.
Stress or trauma – Sudden changes or frightening experiences.
Infection-related syndrome – in some cases, PANDAS (post-strangle syndrome).
Treatment
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
In particular, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) techniques are very effective.
Medications
Doctors prescribe medications like SSRIs if needed.
Family support
Instead of scolding or mocking the child, be understanding and supportive.
Lifestyle changes
Yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques help reduce stress.
If you or your child is experiencing these symptoms, consult a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist immediately. With timely treatment, OCD can be controlled, and the child can live a normal life.
