Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over the phone to review the state’s border security preparedness. Gujarat, sharing a significant border stretch with Pakistan, has been placed on high alert in the wake of recent drone and missile threats.
PM Modi Reviews Security MeasuresDuring the call, PM Modi took stock of advance preparedness measures undertaken by the Gujarat government. He specifically sought details about security and citizen safety arrangements in border districts such as Kutch, Banaskantha, Patan, and Jamnagar. These districts are considered highly sensitive due to their proximity to the India-Pakistan international border.
The Prime Minister also provided guidance on strengthening strategic and civil preparedness, particularly focusing on safety protocols, surveillance mechanisms, and communication networks.
7-Hour Blackout in Border DistrictsAs a precautionary measure, a seven-hour blackout was enforced in parts of Kutch and Banaskantha districts on Thursday night. Officials stated that areas including Bhuj, Naliya, Nakhatrana, and Gandhidham experienced total power cuts to prevent any potential targeting by Pakistan during the night.
Similarly, Suigam and nearly 20 surrounding villages in Banaskantha district were also cut off from the grid as a preventive action.
Drone and Missile Attacks FoiledAccording to the Ministry of Defence, on the night of May 7-8, Pakistani drones and missiles attempted to strike various military installations in northern and western India, including regions from Awantipora in Jammu & Kashmir to Bhuj in Gujarat.
All incoming threats were successfully intercepted using India’s state-of-the-art air defence systems, including the S-400, which played a key role in neutralising aerial threats. As a result, no damage or casualties were reported on Indian soil.
Earlier that day, drone debris was discovered near Khavda village in Kutch, highlighting the seriousness of cross-border threats.
