Manchester United fans have pointed out the irony of John Murtough joining Atalanta, after his role in signing Rasmus Hojlund from the Italian club. Murtough as new owners Ineos revamped the technical staff.
On Tuesday, Serie A side Atalanta announced he had joined them as their new director of global development. Murtough spent 11 years at Old Trafford, taking on his football director role in March 2021.
In that post, he was effectively in overall charge of the men's, women's and academy teams for the Red Devils. He had a mixed spell, with in that time, though he faced major backlash over his recruitment strategy.
Part of that strategy was in the summer of 2023. The Dane has largely failed to live up to his price tag, scoring just 13 goals in the since his arrival.
Murtough's appointment by Atalanta has brought Hojlund's struggles back into the limelight. And United fans suggested that the huge fee Murtough agreed to pay for the striker was a reason behind his new job.

One said: "They fleeced us via him and they hired him as a thank you ? Fairss." A second questioned: "How do they trust him after successfully fleecing him?"
While another demanded Murtough make a move for Hojlund, writing: "Re-sign Hojlund please John."
Despite those misgivings, Atalanta appear delighted that Murtough has agreed to join them. A club statement read: "Atalanta BC are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Murthogh as Director of Global Development within the Club's Sports Department, effective immediately.
"The 54-year-old English executive, who will report directly to Sporting Director Tony D'Amico, will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Club's international strategy and vision.
"This appointment marks Mr. Murtough's first professional experience in Italy, following a distinguished career in England where he held various senior executive roles. His notable previous positions include roles at , , Coventry City, Everton again, the FA Premier League, and .
"The Percassi and Pagliuca families, together with the entire Club, extend a warm welcome to Mr Murtough and wish him every success in his new role within Atalanta BC’s Sports Department."
Murtough had been delighted with Hojlund's signing back in the summer of 2023. He branded the striker an 'exceptional talent' after completing the move.
He said at the time: “Rasmus is a truly exceptional talent. He possesses technical and physical attributes which rank him amongst the best players in the for his age group.
"Working under Erik ten Hag and his coaches will provide Rasmus with the perfect development platform. Everyone across the club will ensure that he is given the time and all the support required to reach his immense potential."
