India created history under young skipper Shubman Gill with their first-ever win at Edgbaston in style – a commanding 336-run triumph in the second Test on Sunday. Pacer Akash Deep picked his maiden fifer in Tests with a haul of six for 99 as England folded up for 271 in their second innings while chasing a mammoth 608-run target.
Starting the final day at 72 for three almost an hour behind schedule due to rains, the onus was on England to try and force a draw. However, they crumbled under sustained pressure from the Indian bowlers and slipped to 153 for six by lunch and were eventually bundled out in the second session. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who scored 184 in first innings, followed it up with a counterattacking 88 but it was too little, too late.
Akash Deep rocked England - early striking twice in a rain-delayed morning session. He returned after lunch to deliver the decisive blow, dismissing Smith (88), the only England batter to show fight in an otherwise underwhelming batting performance by the hosts. He then took the final wicket of Brydon Carse (38). The third Test begins in London on July 10.
