A shocking case of cyber fraud has emerged from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, where a businessman lost ₹2.10 lakh after hackers took control of his phone by sending a photo on WhatsApp. This new hacking method has raised concerns among cybersecurity experts and law enforcement agencies.
How the Fraud Happened-
On March 28, the victim, Pradeep Kumar, received a call from an unknown number.
-
The caller asked him to download a photo sent via WhatsApp and identify the person in it.
-
After downloading the image, his phone started malfunctioning and hung up suddenly.
-
Within minutes, he received an SMS from his bank stating that ₹2.10 lakh had been withdrawn through multiple transactions.
-
When he contacted the bank and cyber cell, he realized he had fallen into a cybercriminal trap.
According to cyber experts:
-
Hackers embed malware (virus) inside an image sent via WhatsApp.
-
When the victim downloads the image, the malware infects the phone's system.
-
The virus gains access to banking apps, OTPs, and personal data, allowing fraudsters to withdraw money remotely.
