Noida International Airport (NIA) successfully completed the calibration of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) on Monday. These systems play a crucial role in guiding aircraft safely during landing, especially under low-visibility conditions.
The airport stated that the calibration process began on October 10, using a Beech King Air 360ER aircraft from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) supported the operation to ensure the airport meets the highest safety standards before it becomes fully operational.
"The calibration, carried out by AAI with support from DGCA India, represents a crucial milestone in our journey toward operational readiness, ensuring the highest safety standards for aircraft operations," NIA said in a social media post.
Understanding ILS and PAPI
The ILS is a radio navigation system that provides precise guidance to pilots during landing, ensuring they stay on the correct path, even in poor weather or low-visibility conditions. The PAPI system, positioned next to the runway, offers pilots visual cues to maintain the correct descent angle during approach.
This successful calibration marks a key step for Noida International Airport as it moves closer to its operational launch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in November 2021, and the facility is expected to begin operations later this year, ahead of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport reaching its full capacity.
Strategically located, the airport is around 72 km from IGI Airport, 52 km from Noida, 130 km from Agra, and 90 km from the Multi-Modal Logistics Hub at Dadri.
