ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A militant attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resulted in the deaths of ten police officers. This incident, which occurred on Friday, highlights the increasing violence in the region.
The attack took place in the Dera Ismail Khan district when a group of approximately 20 to 25 militants assaulted a post manned by the Frontier Constabulary, a paramilitary force assisting police operations in Pakistan's northwest.
The gunfight lasted nearly an hour, leading to the fatalities and injuries. A senior intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that “ten Frontier Constabulary personnel were martyred, and seven were wounded during the attack.”
The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack. Since the Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021, the group has intensified its assaults on security forces, drawing inspiration from their counterparts across the border.
An official from the Frontier Constabulary also confirmed the incident, noting that it occurred about 70 kilometers (approximately 43 miles) east of the Afghan border. In a separate incident late Thursday in the Khyber district, one police officer was killed during a confrontation near the border.
Last month, a roadside bomb targeted a police convoy escorting foreign diplomats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the death of a policeman. This underscores the growing dangers faced by security personnel in this volatile region.
