No matter what colour a human's body is - black, fair, or brown, the colour of his blood is always red. Not only humans, but most animals also have red blood. However, there are some creatures whose blood is blue or white. But why is the blood of most creatures red? Let us understand this in simple language.
Why is blood red?: The main reason for the red color of blood is a special protein called "hemoglobin". Hemoglobin contains iron, and it is found in the red blood cells of our body. Its biggest job is to transport oxygen to all parts of the body and bring back carbon dioxide from there.
From a scientific perspective: When hemoglobin binds with oxygen, it turns red. When blood travels from the lungs to the rest of the body, it has oxygen bound to it, which is why it is bright red. But when oxygen is removed from hemoglobin and carbon dioxide is bound in its place, the color of the blood can appear dark red or sometimes blue. Therefore, blood in the veins of the body appears dark, while in the arteries it is red and bright.
What is the function of hemoglobin?: The biggest function of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen and carbon dioxide from one place to another. When the blood reaches the body parts, hemoglobin leaves oxygen there and takes carbon dioxide. This process is very important to provide energy to the cells of the body, because the cells need oxygen so that they can get their energy.
Structure of Hemoglobin: Hemoglobin is a protein made up of four parts (subunits). Each part contains a group called "heme" which contains an iron particle (ion). This iron can easily bind with oxygen. When the blood reaches the lungs, oxygen binds with this iron, making the hemoglobin oxygenated and it is called "oxyhemoglobin".
