8, Including 2 Kids, Dead After Wall Collapse In Delhi Amid Heavy Rain

New Delhi: Eight people, including two children, were killed early Saturday after a boundary wall collapsed in Delhi’s Hari Nagar locality following heavy overnight rain. The wall, located next to an old temple in the Jaitpur area, caved in on makeshift jhuggies occupied mostly by scrap dealers.

Police said victims were pulled from the debris and rushed to hospital in critical condition, but several succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Additional DCP (South East) Aishwarya Sharma said the jhuggi cluster has been evacuated as a precautionary measure. “We have cleared the area to avoid any further loss of life,” she said.

The incident came as parts of Delhi had been battered by intense rain since late Friday night, with the IMD issuing a red alert for heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. The downpour triggered severe waterlogging in several areas, including Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, RK Puram and Moti Bagh, disrupting traffic across the city.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and structurally weak settlements to remain alert, with more heavy rain forecast in the coming days.

The intense morning rain on Raksha Bandhan (today) left several areas waterlogged and underpasses flooded. With rain came massive traffic jams and the weekend plans of several Delhi residents went for a toss.
