Bryson DeChambeau has effusively praised Augusta National in the run-up to this year's Masters, a stark change of tune from when he previously described the course as a par 67.
The US Open champion is aiming to bag his third major and will be among a dozen LIV Golf players vying for glory at the Masters. Ahead of the first major of 2025, DeChambeau has been waxing lyrical about Augusta, despite once being less than flattering towards the renowned golf course.
In 2020, he raised eyebrows by bragging that Augusta was a "par 67 for me" despite it being a par 72. The 31-year-old's brash statement ruffled feathers, and he has conceded since then that his words were a "mistake" from which he has taken lessons.
At LIV Miami on Friday, when quizzed on what excites him most about the Masters, DeChambeau did not hold back his admiration. "I honestly love the atmosphere. It's one of the most peaceful places," he enthused.
"My favorite moment is when the sun is kind of setting and everybody has kind of gotten off the golf course and you're just hitting golf balls by yourself or a couple other pros... and you see the sun going down.
"That's what I look forward to a lot coming into next week, other than playing well and giving myself a chance. I really enjoy those moments after the round practicing hard into the night."
DeChambeau's comments are in stark contrast to boldly declaring Augusta as a "par 67" back in 2020, stating: "I'm looking at it (Augusta) as a par 67 for me because I can reach all the par fives in two, no problem. If the conditions stay the way they are, that's what I feel like par is for me."
When DeChambeau reflected on those words ahead of last year's Masters, he offered a more humble take: "I have a level of respect for this golf course that's a little bit different than a couple years ago... Regarding the 67 comment, you mess up. I'm not a perfect person. Everybody messes up. You learn from your mistake, and that was definitely one."
DeChambeau has had mixed fortunes in Augusta, including missed cuts and a mere single top-10 finish-a tie for sixth place last year.
He confidently remarked on Friday: "I'd say I'm in a great frame of mind. I'm happy about life. Got a lot of positive things going for me, not only in YouTube but outside of that, in business, and just the people that I have around me. I think we're stronger than ever, and that's what matters most, ultimately.
"Yeah, putting on a green jacket, winning the US Open trophy, winning the Open Championship, the PGA Championship, that's all great. But really what matters to me is the people that I have around me and who I can trust."
