Parts of two major UK motorways were closed this morning (Friday) after a police incident. The M1 in Hertfordshire is closed northbound between J6 (Waterdale Interchange) and J6A (M25) between St Albans and Watford. National Highways said due to the location of the incident, the M25 was also closed clockwise between J20 and J21 and also anti-clockwise between J21A and J19.
The agency added the closures led to "long delays" of 30 minutes or more, but the road has now been reopened to motorists from 6.30am.
A statement from Hertfordshire Police to Express.co.uk said: "Police were called at 4.14am today (Friday 4 July) to report a concern for welfare of a woman on a bridge above the M1 carriageway at Junction 6A.
"Closures were put in place on the M1 at junction 6A and on the M25 at junction 21A while emergency services responded to the incident. The road closures were lifted shortly after 6.30am after the woman was brought to safety. We thank motorists for their patience while the motorways were closed."
