Grout can be one of the hardest things in your home to keep clean, but there is a simple solution that involves a 63p kitchen item you already have. Bathroom grout is especially hard to clean because grime builds up and hardens rather quickly. A combination of soap and humidity makes the bathroom notoriously difficult to clean, yet it remains sparkly like it was when you first got it. However, there are ways to make your life easier when it comes to cleaning your bathroom.
One of them is by using a simple hack to clean bathroom grout. Grout is the material that fills the space between your tiles. All too often, we see white grout quickly become discoloured, and it can appear orange, red, and black as dirt builds up and becomes more difficult to remove. Grout becomes dirty quickly due to its porous nature, which allows it to easily capture water and soap scum. Eventually, mould and mildew can form, especially when your bathroom isn't properly ventilated. But it is not too late to turn things around, even when your grout becomes completely black.
Your first instinct might be to grab a bottle of bleach and metaphorically blast the problem with dynamite. However, there is a much easier way to clean the grout between your bathroom tiles.
Jennifer Sharpe, Chief Fragrance Officer at Fabulosa, told Saga that washing-up liquid is a great solution for this problem. She revealed: "If you want to achieve spotless grout, all you need to do is take your washing-up liquid and mix it with bicarbonate of soda to form a luscious-smelling foam.
"Then simply take the mix on an old toothbrush and begin scrubbing. Leave the mixture to do its work for a few minutes and wipe away with a damp cloth to reveal a sparkling shine."
It turns out that a few people have caught onto this trick. In one Reddit thread, people said that they regularly use washing-up liquid to clean their bathrooms. One person revealed: "I decided to use washing-up liquid/dish soap to clean my bathroom a few weeks ago. It was a bit of a random act of madness on my behalf. Actually, it turned out friggin good. It cleaned the limescale and dirt off the taps, sink, bath, etc. The bathroom looks clean and shiny."
In response, one person wrote: "I use it on almost anything in my house. It's also good for getting grease stains off clothes (mixed with baking soda), for washing tile floors, cabinets, wiping down toys, etc. There's almost nothing a soapy rag shouldn't be used on."
A third wrote: "Dish soap and warm water are great for almost anything. Need actual disinfection? Use a bleach rag (not spray) after everything is clean and let it air dry."
