Harry Redknapp has expressed his disappointment with the FA's decision to appoint a foreign manager for the England national team, naming German Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's successor. Set to be unveiled at a presser in Wembley later today at 1.30pm, Tuchel brings a wealth of experience from the top-flight European football to the Three Lions' setup.
The swift decision comes after fast-paced negotiations on Tuesday, leaving Tuchel poised to become the third non-English manager of the side, joining the ranks of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. The former Spurs boss Redknapp, who lifted the FA Cup with Portsmouth and was himself once in the running for the England role, shared his reservations on Sky Sports News: "He's lost his job quite quickly at a couple of clubs.
"It's not like he's been a massive success. He's come and gone at a couple of clubs. I'm very patriotic, I think we should have an English manager but obviously the field was very small to choose from."
Despite Redknapp's doubts, Tuchel's track recordincluding leading Chelsea to a Champions League victory and managing high-profile teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munichdemonstrates his pedigree.
The FA had previously announced they were looking beyond nationality, seeking the best candidate, following reports of even approaching Pep Guardiola of Manchester City. With Lee Carsley temporarily leading the team through the autumn's Nations League fixtures, Tuchel's official announcement is the latest move in shaping England's path forward.
Speculation over the England managerial position has been rife, with Carsley previously considered a contender. However, his ambiguous stance on his ambitions has fuelled further rumours.
The national team's recent defeat to Greece intensified beliefs that the FA might pursue a new direction.
Thomas Tuchel emerged as a potential candidate for the role after parting ways with Bayern Munich last summer. His potential appointment would reunite him with Harry Kane, whom he managed at Bayern.
Harry Kane, speaking to Sky Sports News earlier on Tuesday, said: "I haven't been told anything. Until it is announced I can't really comment but obviously I know Thomas well from last year. He is a fantastic coach, a fantastic person. I'm sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it."
Stuart Pearce, the former England defender, commented on talkSPORT regarding the high expectations facing Tuchel, should he take over following Southgate's tenure which saw England reach two major finals. Pearce stated: "When Gareth left in the summer people were saying, 'We need to go the next step.'"
Pearce added: "Where is the next step from getting to finals and being runner-up? The next step is winning trophies. That will be the expectation and I think he's got a really tough tournament in a year-and-a-half to attempt to win the World Cup in the (United) States, Mexico and Canada. That's a tough prospect."
