Patrick Mahomes II and Tyreek Hill were left gobsmacked by the blistering pace of newest star Xavier Worthy at the annual Combine, where he clocked a 40-yard dash that beat the fastest man in the world - Usain Bolt. The latest recruit completed the 40-yard sprint in just 4.21 seconds at the NFL Combine, edging past Bolt's record of 4.22 seconds - and leaving behind both Hill and Mahomes' personal bests of 4.29 and 4.80 seconds respectively.
During the event, the quarterback and the ex-Chiefs wide receiver took to social media to express their astonishment at Worthy's lightning speed, with tweeting: "4.25...crazyyyyy."
This tweet came before Worthy's time was officially corrected to reflect his 'true' record, showcasing just how quick the rookie receiver is. Hill, now a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was equally impressed, as he said: "4.2 is crazy sheesh."
Despite Worthy's triumph over Hill in the 40-yard dash, the Dolphins star still boasts an impressive 100m sprint record of just 10.19 seconds - a mere half-second slower than world record holder Bolt's 9.58 seconds. Remarkably, Worthy even surpassed Bolt in the 40-yard dash, with the iconic Jamaican sprinter having previously matched the NFL record with 4.22 seconds.
American sprinter and Olympic medalist Noah Lyles came to Bolt's defence regarding his speed compared to Worthy's, pointing out at the time that the Jamaican legend didn't have the advantage of football boots, proper running attire, or a warm-up to enhance his performance. Posting on X, Lyles remarked: "Do we have to show the video of him running that time with jeans, no cleats, and no warming up. Just to remind y'all."
Worthy isn't the only one to have been on the receiving end of some Lyle criticism, as Hill previously lambasted the sprinter for his less-than-stellar showing in the men's 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he finished third. Despite Lyle revealing he had been battling COVID-19, which affected his performance, Hill dismissed the excuse and challenged the track star to a race via social media.
Speaking on the "Up and Adams Show" with Kay Adams, Hill - who is aptly nicknamed 'Cheetah' due to his blistering pace - said: "Noah Lyles can't say nothing after what just happened to him. He wants to come out and pretend that he's sick... Just speaking to what you know about, and that's track."
The confident Dolphins star didn't hold back on his challenge, adding: "I would beat Noah Lyles. When I beat him, I'll put on a COVID mask and let him know I mean business." However, Lyles didn't seem too perturbed by Hill's challenge, as he replied: "What's that guy? What's the cheetah guy from football? I can't remember his name." The two are now said to with Terry Crews' co-founded outfit Super Serious.
Meanwhile, Worthy has joined Mahomes' impressive offensive lineup at the Chiefs and is expected to rise to the occasion in light of Rashee Rice's likely season-ending knee injury. Despite this setback, the two-time Super Bowl quarterback appears unfazed and looks ready to utilise Worthy's talents beyond mere speed.
Following the signing, Mahomes said: "Just route running [and] a guy that played physical, too. For him to not weigh a ton, he plays hard, he plays through stuff. He goes out there and competes, and then the speed, obviously it opens up the field, but he's not just a fast receiver.
"He plays hard, plays fast and you want those types of guys on your football team."
