Edinburgh also topped the list when looking at tourist numbers in relation to population size.

Data from the , based on short-term let bookings from sites like Airbnb, Expedia and Booking.com, shows that when adjusted for population, Edinburgh is the most visited city in the UK.

The data, taken between July and September 2023, revealed that international visitors made up 68% of all short-term stays in Edinburgh - the highest share of any UK city.

This puts it ahead of Oxford, Belfast, Glasgow and Cambridge.

Experts say one reason for the city's popularity is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which takes place every August.

The huge event brings in performers and visitors from around the world and is considered the largest arts festival in the world.

But even outside of festival season, Edinburgh's appeal is clear.

In 2024, the city was named one of the most beautiful in the world by , one of the most influential American travel magazines.

Describing Edinburgh, the magazine said: "An ancient city set on a dramatic landscape of extinct volcanoes and anchored by a grand, Acropolis-like castle? Yes, Edinburgh sure is a stunner."

Travel experts at also praised the Scottish capital, calling it "the crown jewel of the British Isles" and highlighting landmarks like the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat.

While the city is packed with historic streets and gothic buildings, it also offers beaches, green parks and coastal walks.

And with direct flights from cities like London, Paris, New York and Berlin, Edinburgh is easy to reach for international visitors.
