Motorists could save hundreds of pounds by pressing one hidden button found in many petrol and diesel vehicles across the UK. Most modern cars have a dedicated 'Eco mode' switch that dials down car throttle response, limits engine power output, and optimises gear shifts.

This all works to lower fuel consumption, helping road users keep petrol and diesel in their tanks for longer. According to experts at Car Finance Saver, activating eco mode in the right situations can trim fuel use by up to 5%. This can translate to a potential annual saving of between £100 and £200 for the average UK driver in a major boost.

Pete Ridley, Motoring Expert at Car Finance Saver said: "It's not magic, but it's one of the easiest ways to improve fuel efficiency without changing your lifestyle or sacrificing comfort. It essentially tells your car to drive more gently, using just the energy it needs, and no more.

"Over time, it makes a noticeable difference to your fuel bills, especially when petrol prices are high. Eco mode works best for everyday trips where smooth, gentle driving is possible, such as school runs, errands, and town driving."

The button is usually found near the steering wheel or gear shift, making it easy for road users to locate while behind the wheel.

In some modern cars, modes can also be changed using the infotainment screen usually fitted to the car dashboard. Although Eco mode is designed to save fuel, experts have suggested the tool is best used in certain situations.

For example, they stress that the mode can be used on short local trips or in slow-moving traffic. Motorists cruising below 45 mph or those travelling on flat roads where speed and power aren't essential could benefit from the fuel savings achieved in Eco mode.

However, they warn that the switch should be avoided in situations where road users require an extra burst of power. Drivers merging onto motorways, those towing or carrying heavy loads or motorists driving up steep hills may not benefit from limiting their car's power.

Pete added: "Smart driving isn't just about where you go, it's about how you get there. Eco mode is a simple, accessible tool that puts control back in the driver's hands."
