Motorists have been warned that one of the most crucial parts of their car could fail in , running the risk of leaving them stranded.

Whilst many drivers typically and , the new and used vehicle retail platform highlighted that the cold autumn temperatures can cause to stop working.

Fortunately, a motoring expert at Auto Trader highlighted that the majority of key fobs still feature a manual key hidden inside, allowing owners to gain access to their vehicle, even .

They explained: "Most smart keys are equipped with an emergency blade with a mechanical fob inside in case of emergencies."

Still, the platform acknowledged there are ways for drivers to regain entry to their vehicles in case their smart keys fail.

During colder temperatures, batteries typically have worsened performance, with the ions inside moving at a slower rate and decreasing the amount of power available.

Whilst this means that drivers are not able to unlock their car doors at the push of a button or by simply approaching the vehicle, they can still gain access by finding the key blade often located inside.

To find this, drivers should look for a small gap that could be prised open to reveal the key blade and then look for similar openings on and around the driver and front passenger door handles on the vehicle. To prevent causing unnecessary damage, it is best for drivers to look up these locations for their specific model online before attempting to remove any parts from their car or key fob.

This is particularly important for motorists who lease their vehicle, with Auto Trader highlighting that any damage caused by accessing the key blade or physical door lock could incur additional fees.

They added: "Drivers should be cautious with using their keys to open their car door as any damages and car scratches might lead to some charges at the end of your lease policy.

"Some minor scratches are acceptable under fair wear and tear are acceptable as long as they don't expose the primer or bare metal. If there is considerable damage to your vehicle, contact your leasing company and insurance provider to arrange an approved repair."

To prevent the key fob battery from failing in cold temperatures, Auto Trader urged drivers to store it in a warm location when it is not in use.

Whilst motorists should still make sure it is in a safe space when unattended, particularly if their car has keyless entry, warm locations can help to keep the battery healthy.

Alternatively, if drivers have any suspicions that the battery in their key fob is starting to lose charge, needing to get closer to their car to unlock it, they should replace it well in advance to prevent issues.
