Mobile phones are attached to our hands everywhere we go, but experts revealed we might actually be holding our devices incorrectly. According to a Which survey, three in ten mobile phone users complained about constant poor signal over the past 12 months.
However, experts from the consumer champion revealed there are a few ways to improve signal before changing providers, and one of them starts with our hands. In older model phones, the antenna was always visible because it stuck directly out of the top of the phone to improve signal. We all knew not to block it, and to extend it to get a better reception.
However, in new models, the antenna is hidden, and experts said that incorrect hand placement could inadvertently block signal.
Researcher and writer Adam Snook advised: "It's possible your hand is blocking the antenna and therefore making your signal worse, so try holding it in different positions.
"If you use a phone case, try taking this off as it might be blocking the antenna or signals from reaching your phone. This is particularly likely if it has metal parts or an unusual shape."
iPhone antennas are integrated into the phone's body and internal components, and the specific location varies by model. However, it is often found along the edges of the frame.
According to Gear Patrol, the small coloured plastic lines at the four corners of some iPhones are 'antenna lines', and link your phone's internal bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 5G antennas.
So, if you are having trouble accessing signal on your phone, try repositioning your hands to make sure you don't cover the lines at the edges. Every model is different, so it's worth checking the specifics for your mobile.
Experts at Which? also suggested checking signal in the area to find out how reliable the connection is, and to switch to aeroplane mode, which forces your phone to reconnect to the network.
Another tip is to connect your phone to Bluetooth headphones, and then leave the device in a location with the best signal, so you can carry on with your call while you move around the house.
Thick walls or being in a basement could also obstruct reception, and in that case, they suggested going outside or standing near a window.
