There are a number of mistakes people don't realise they are making that cause problems with Wi-Fi connection and internet speeds. Slow Wi-Fi is extremely frustrating when it comes to things like streaming, gaming and working from home. When our Wi-Fi isn't working properly, our first step is usually trying to reboot it. And if that doesn't work, we often contact our provider straight away which is time-consuming.
But there are ways to improve your connection at home with simple hacks. In fact, there are mistakes you may be making that are severely interrupting your connection, speed and reach. Experts advise against making multiple mistakes when you're trying to get the most out of your Wi-Fi package, including where to place your Wi-Fi and what to keep it away from. When your Wi-Fi is causing you a headache, make sure that you are not making any of these mistakes when it comes to your router.
1. Placing it near your TV and other devicesMany people might have their Wi-Fi routers sitting next to their TV sets in their living rooms. While this seems like a natural place to put it, it can actually lead to disruptions with your connection. TVs and Wi-Fi routers emit similar radio waves, meaning that a TV can interfere with internet signals. Something similar happens with devices such as Bluetooth speakers and microwaves.
2. Placing it near thick wallsPlacing a router near thick walls, or walls in general, may have a negative impact on your signal and internet speeds. Experts say that you shouldn't assume Wi-Fi will make it past thick walls to different rooms. It is actually best to have it in a more open space. Signals can struggle to get through dense materials such as concrete and metal. In fact, thick walls can even deflect signals, meaning they won't reach your device when you are streaming or browsing online.
3. Hiding your routerA Wi-Fi router may not fit into the design or aesthetic of your living room or kitchen, but you shouldn't hide it away. This can damage its performance, leading to a frustrating time when it comes to work and entertainment on your devices. Instead, have your router in an open space, such as on a countertop or desk.
4. Placing it on the floorPlacing your router on the floor can greatly affect the performance of your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi signals project outward and downward. If your router is placed on the floor, then there is less direction for the signal to go. Professionals will always advise you to place your Wi-Fi up high. Again, placing it on a table, desk or countertop is the best option, for all of the above reasons.
