Wi-Fi might not be working as fast as it can if you have your router placed beside one common household device. Slow or interrupted internet connection can be highly frustrating, especially when it comes to streaming movies or TV shows, or working from home. Most of us pay for Wi-Fi every month and we expect it to perform well. However, before you go to your provider with the problem, there might be an easy fix you can try at home.
Experts say that where you place your Wi-Fi router is extremely important when it comes to internet speeds and overall performance. If you place it in certain areas of your home, it won't reach far, and your connection might be interrupted often. However, while placement is important, it is also what you put the router beside that can make the difference. There are certain devices and appliances in your home that you should keep away from your router if you want faster Wi-Fi.
Keep your Wi-Fi router away from your TV, says Hyperoptic. "Radio signals are the enemy of your router and will interfere with the broadband connection; this means your TV, radio, wireless phone, or even remote-control toy can all lag yourBridgertonbinge watching," the experts said.
"The best place to put your router is at a reasonable distance (around 5 feet) from other electronics, which will ensure a better wifi strength for everyone in the household."
LitFibre says that it's a common misconception that you should place your router beside your TV. "Sure, it may be convenient, but your TV interferes with the Wi-Fi signal in your home," they said.
In fact, there are a number of devices you should keep your Wi-Fi router away from. One of them is your microwave, which emits the same radio waves as your router, leading to possible interference.
You should also keep it in an open space to make sure the connection isn't interrupted. "Thefewerwalls and doors there are between you and your router, the better your chance of getting thebest performance out of your router," says Hyperoptic. "Your router being in an open space allows a clear pathway to your device, which meanshyperfastbroadband."
