“No Confusion,” Yashasvi Jaiswal Supports His Skipper Shubman Gill Amid Jasprit Bumrah Row

Yashasvi Jaiswal has come forward to address the backlash surrounding India’s team changes for the second Test against England in Birmingham, firmly stating that there is no internal confusion regarding selection decisions.

India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah despite his superb performance in the opening Test prompted sharp criticism from several cricketing greats including Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Aaron Finch and Dale Steyn. Jasprit Bumrah had been the standout performer in the first match, making his absence all the more surprising.

However, Yashasvi Jaiswal stood by his skipper, expressing confidence in the leadership of Shubman Gill. He described Shubman Gill’s batting as incredible and praised the clarity with which the young captain is guiding the team. According to Yashasvi Jaiswal, the squad is confident in its direction and focused on doing its best, dismissing any notion of uncertainty within the camp.

The day began with England’s captain Ben Stokes once again deciding to bowl first, a bold move given the seemingly ideal conditions for batting. The decision initially paid off as KL Rahul was dismissed early after chopping the ball onto his stumps. But the innings soon stabilised thanks to a partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair. Though Karun Nair and Rishabh Pant couldn’t capitalise on their starts, Yashasvi Jaiswal kept his strong form going, crafting a fluent 87 off 107 balls with 13 boundaries. He fell short of a century by just 13 runs but played a vital role in setting up a solid total.

Reflecting on his innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal explained that he focused on playing session by session and adapting to the conditions. He described the early phase as challenging, noting that the new ball was moving and the pitch felt slightly damp. He adjusted accordingly, choosing his moments to score once the conditions eased and tried to make the most of the opportunities as they came.

Despite narrowly missing out on a hundred, the young opener was philosophical about it. He admitted the disappointment but emphasised the importance of learning and, above all, enjoying the game. For Yashasvi Jaiswal, cricket is a beautiful sport and he believes in playing with passion while not getting consumed by personal milestones.

When quizzed about England’s strategy of setting a leg-side trap and tempting him to play the pull shot, Yashasvi Jaiswal shared that he constantly tries to read the situation and find the best solution. He reiterated the importance of having a plan and remaining mentally engaged to respond appropriately to such tactics.

As the day ended, Shubman Gill continued his golden run with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 114. His second consecutive century put India in a strong position at 310 for 5.

Yashasvi Jaiswal concluded the day’s reflections by praising the overall effort, saying the situation looked positive and expressing hope that the team would continue to build on their solid foundation.
