AGRA: After a juice vendor and a factory labourer in UP's Aligarh were left stunned by Rs 7.8 crore and Rs 11 crore income tax (I-T) notices respectively, now a sanitation worker drawing a monthly Rs 15,000 salary received Rs 34 crore notice.
The letter, issued on March 22, reads: "As per the records, the assessee, Karan Kumar, has not filed his ITR for AY 2019-20. As per the record/system... the assessee has an income of Rs 33,85,85,368 for 2019-20…"
Speaking to TOI, 34-year-old Karan Kumar said he received the I-T notice on March 29. Initially, he did not understand the content of the notice. He got the jolt of his life after he came to know what was written in the notice after he consulted some people.
"I am a sanitation worker at the SBI branch in Khair area of the city, and my monthly income is Rs 15,000. I joined this job on a contractual basis in 2021. Today (Tuesday), I lodged a complaint at Chandaus police station," said Karan.
Karan claimed his PAN card is being misused by someone. He said that in 2019, he was employed at a private company in Noida and during this time, the management asked for some documents, including his PAN card, which he submitted.
Meanwhile, I-T officer Nain Singh, posted in Aligarh, told TOI, "Their PAN cards, registered in our system, showed high income, and this is the reason why the notices were issued. I am aware of these cases. We will put all these cases in faceless I-T assessment, and if we find that their PAN cards are misused, we will carry out a probe."
