AGRA: A 46-year-old woman, who was picked up for questioning by police from her home on Saturday evening and was released late in the night, was found hanging from a tree the next morning at a village in Aligarh district.
Her husband and other villagers protested, alleging that she was "tortured" and could not take the humiliation. Senior officers on Monday said the SHO was shunted out and a probe was ordered.
It all started after a case was registered by one Shyam Sundar Singh at Dadon police station against one Rakesh Yadav on March 29, alleging the latter violently assaulted the former's mother and abducted his widowed sister-in-law. The woman was later found, injured and in a semi-conscious state near her village.
Subsequently, a police team from Dadon brought Rakesh's sister and her son to the police station for questioning. Following their release from custody late on Saturday, she allegedly took her life. On Sunday, agitated villagers initially stopped the police from taking the body for postmortem and demanded action against the "culprits". They relented only after Dadon SHO, Yogendra Singh, was shifted to the police lines and Aligarh SSP Sanjiv Suman initiated a probe.
The woman's husband said, "My wife was picked up from our house by the SHO and his team. They also assaulted her in our house, and they later beat her again at the police station. Unable to live with the humiliation, she killed herself."
Aligarh (rural) SP Amrit Jain said, "We have received a complaint from the woman's husband. An FIR would be registered against the erring officers after the probe report's recommendations."
