TN cybercrime police bust fake NCRP website

Send Push
Chennai: Tamil Nadu police’s cybercrime wing has busted a fake National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) developed by some people in Hong Kong.

A team from the cyber patrolling unit, which frequently enters cyberspace to identify fake websites and fraudsters attempting to target people through fake profiles, spotted the NCRP website.

The website -- https://infaulwnmx.cyou/ -- was identified by the team. It had an inbuilt setting to display in full screen with a voice-over stating, "Your computer has been blocked because you have seen some pornographic contents." The fraudsters deceived the public by displaying a fine of Rs 30,290 with IPC/BNS sections, prompting victims to pay using credit cards. They then captured these details to swindle money.

Based on the report, swift action was taken, and a notice as per the IT Act 2021 was sent to the domain registrar based in Hong Kong, China, to block the fraudulent website. The illegal website was taken down immediately.

A cybercrime police officer said, "Cyber patrolling is the use of the internet by law enforcement to detect and prevent cybercrime. It involves searching for harmful and illegal information online. Cyber patrolling can help prevent cybercrimes in their early stages and ensure a safer cyberspace."

Advisory to Citizens

Check the website url: Scammers often create spoofed websites that look almost identical to legitimate ones but may have small differences.

Verify HTTPS:
Legitimate websites use HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). HTTPS signifies that user data is secure, the ownership of the website is verified, and it prevents attackers from creating a fake version of the site.

Check spelling: Fake websites often contain typos or incorrect spellings. Carefully investigate the domain name, as govt websites always end with gov.in.

Be cautious of pop-ups: While accessing any websites, carefully examine the pop-ups and allow them only if necessary.

Do not click on ads:
Advertisements displayed on websites may be from illegitimate sources. Do not click on such ads.

Think before you enter info: Always think multiple times before entering sensitive financial information such as card number, CVV and others.
