KULLU: With most parts of the state witnessing a rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures over the last week, Himachal Pradesh hills appear to be getting warmer.
Many parts of the state, especially the mid and low hills, have recorded maximum temperatures two to four degrees above normal. On Friday, at least nine weather stations recorded maximum temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or above, with Una registering the highest at 36 degrees C - 3.7 degrees above normal.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, Dhaulakuan in Sirmaur recorded a maximum of 34.4 degrees C, Bilaspur 33 degrees C, Kangra 32.5 degrees C, Mandi 30.8 degrees C, Solan and Nahan 30 degrees C each, Bhuntar 30.3 degrees C, and Sundernagar 32.6 degrees C. The minimum temperatures have also been gradually inching up in the state over the last week.
As per the meteorological department data, Kukumseri in Lahaul Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius on Friday.
The minimum temperature in tourist destinations has also risen over the last week. Shimla on Friday recorded a minimum temperature of 12.6 degrees C, which was 2.7 degrees above normal, while Manali recorded a minimum temperature of 8.9 degrees C, which was 3.5 degrees above normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had last month predicted hot summers with a greater number of heatwave days and deficient rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.
According to the IMD's forecast, there is a high probability (65%-75%) that the mean average temperatures are likely to remain above normal in most parts of HP from March to May of this year. The IMD also predicted a higher number of heatwave days in the state this summer.
Meanwhile, according to the meteorological centre's monthly weather report, the state received deficient rainfall in March. The state recorded 75.5 mm of rainfall, which was 33% less than normal. It was also the 54th lowest rainfall since 1901. The state received the lowest rainfall of 5.4 mm in March 2022. While Kullu received the highest 156.3 mm of rain, 11% more than normal, Una recorded the lowest 17.1 mm.
