AGRA: In the fourth such case within a span of two weeks in Aligarh district, Rajkumar Singh , 45, a watchman at a brick kiln, received a notice of Rs 2.2 crore from the Income Tax (I-T) department on Thursday, leaving his entire family in distress.
This follows similar notices previously issued to a juice seller, locksmith, and bank sweeper. According to the notice, crores of rupees worth of business transactions were conducted in Delhi using Rajkumar's PAN card. Rajkumar asserts that he has never paid income tax.
Rajkumar, who claims to earn only around Rs 5,000 per month, told TOI, "I was shocked after knowing that I have to pay such a huge amount. I have never paid tax because I do not fall under the tax-paying category," adding, I will make a complaint to the I-T dept." He is trying to get police's help as well.
The incident highlights a concerning pattern of fraudulent misuse of personal information of people from low-income backgrounds.
An Income tax officer posted in Aligarh said, "An investigation is underway, and action will be taken accordingly." He further said, "Faceless assessment will be conducted under Section 144 B . It is a system where income tax assessments are conducted electronically without any direct interaction between the taxpaying individual and the assessing officer."
