HYDERABAD: Seven members of a family returning from a pilgrimage were killed after their car fell into a canal at Shivampet in Medak district on Wednesday.
Police said the car had eight occupants, three of them children, and all, barring the driver, Nam Singh, died in the accident. Singh suffered grievous injuries and is battling for life.
The car was travelling at a high speed when the driver lost control and first hit a tree, before the car rolled down into the canal.
The deceased were identified as Danavath Shiva (55), his wife Danavath Durgi (45), M Anitha (30), her daughters M Bindu (14) and M Sravani (12), Singh's wife G Shanthi (45) and their daughter G Mamatha (16).
The family hailed from Pamubanda Thanda in Medak. They had gone to visit temples in Toopran, and the accident occurred during the return journey, a police officer said. "It was a clear case of speeding. Locals who saw the accident alerted police," Medak SP Uday Kumar Reddy told TOI.
Cops reached the spot, and the car was pulled out using a crane. Seven passengers were found dead, but Singh was still alive but unconscious. Police have registered a case against him for rash and negligent driving.
CM A Revanth Reddy spoke to officials and sought details about the accident. He instructed district officials to extend all possible help to the family members.
