Wedding rush in Telangana, but few dates tie up families in knots

HYDERABAD : The wedding season is back and so is the chaos. As auspicious dates are few and over a lakh weddings are expected to take place from Oct to Dec in Telangana, families are struggling to make arrangements due to the high demand for wedding slots in temples, function halls etc.

The rush now is mainly because auspicious dates were unavailable during summer, astrologers said. With halls hard to find, some are even considering celebrating weddings in farmhouses or open land parcels.

“Multiple dates are considered as ‘ shubh muhurat ’ each year. It may vary due to the position of stars and planets,” said P Rajasekhara Sharma, a city-based priest.

According to astrologers, the auspicious wedding dates in the next few months fall on Oct 16, 18, 24, 27; Nov 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17; and Dec 4 to 7, 14, 15, and 25. Among these dates, Oct 27, Nov 8, 10 and Dec 6, 11 are considered most auspicious.

On these particular days there are many weddings across the state. Some priests even perform two weddings in a day. The entire calendar is already fixed,” said Ganesh Ateyra Sharma, a priest from Warangal.

Referring to the current wedding rush, A Pratyusha, co-founder of Sweet Pickle Wedding Photography , said, “The demand is so high that we are engaging freelancers apart from our in-house teams.

The taste of younger generation has changed. They don’t want monotonous still photography. They want to capture candid moments of weddings without disrupting the process. Wedding photog raphy has become an artistic engagement.”

For many middle class families it has also become difficult to afford the high prices of halls.
“We planned to book a hall for a date in the first week of Nov. But with the quotes given to us we want to shift the wedding venue from Hyderabad to the bridegroom’s place in Nizamabad,” said a parent, a private teacher, from Kukatpally.

Then there are also weddings which are held in community building or in the space in front of houses.

“If we consider these weddings as well, the number would be much more than one lakh,” said Chandrasekhar S, a pundit.
