Coimbatore: The city corporation conducted a three-day camp at Gondi Colony near Sundarapuram to identify the exact population there and collect other details to provide them with basic infrastructure, including a new school and healthcare facility.
Home to a tribal community, who identify themselves as Gondi people, this colony falls in the city corporation limits. However, the area is disconnected from all the developments, be it in the area of health, education or employment. The three-day camp, which began on Tuesday, was conducted to address this issue.
City health officer A Mohan said the colony was home to 92 children. "At least 25 of them did not have birth certificates. We arranged birth certificates for 18 of them based on the entries made at the urban primary health centres. While the remaining seven children's names are also entered with the urban primary health centres, since it has exceeded a year, the authorized person to issue the certificate is the revenue divisional officer. We are coordinating with the district administration regarding the same."
The camp also featured a special health drive to provide vaccination and monitor maternal health. A mobile TB screening van was stationed at the colony as part of the drive.
The city health officer said they had identified two to three suspected cases of leprosy, for which an intense screening and early detection is being carried out. "Routine check-up for diabetes and blood pressure was done under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme, a flagship initiative of the state govt."
