NEW DELHI: Jawans of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) were seen celebrating after a major operation in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, where 27 Maoist were killed, including the CPI (Maoist) general secretary Basavaraju.

Videos from the scene showed personnel dancing in the rain, throwing colours and marking the success with music.

Relatives welcomed the jawans home with arti and chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai."

Inspector General of Bastar Range, P Sundarraj, said Basavaraju had played an active role in planning several attacks on security forces and public representatives.

“His killing is a great achievement in the anti-Naxal operation,” he said.

The joint operation took place in the Abujmarh forests, a known Maoist stronghold. Among the weapons recovered were AK-47s, SLR-INSAS carbines and large quantities of ammunition. One DRG jawan was martyred and several others were injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the forces for their success. In a post on X, he said, “Proud of our forces for this remarkable success. Our Government is committed to eliminating the menace of Maoism and ensuring a life of peace and progress for our people.”

Union home minister Amit Shah said this is the first time in three decades that a General Secretary-ranked Maoist leader has been neutralised.

Calling Basavaraju the “backbone of the Naxal movement”, he added that 54 Naxals had been arrested and 84 had surrendered in Chhattisgarh after Operation Black Forest.
