Kochi: Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) moved up to the 1001–1200 band in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, improving from 1201–1500 band it held in 2025. This marked the university's first major rise in four years, after remaining in the same range from 2022.
With this, Cusat became the second-ranked university in Kerala and one among the top 50 institutions in India in the 2026 edition of THE rankings.
The rankings are based on five main indicators: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Cusat recorded significant improvement in research quality and international outlook, which played a key role in its advancement. Its research quality score rose from 29.9 to 35.8, while international outlook improved from 21.8 to 25.6.
This upward movement follows consistent performance in other ranking systems, including NIRF, KIRF, Times Interdisciplinary, Times Impact and QS Sustainability rankings.
Cusat vice-chancellor M Junaid Bushiri credited the achievement to the collective efforts of university's faculty, researchers, students and staff. He also said the university's focus on academic excellence and global collaboration helped it achieve the feat.
