Marvel’s upcoming superhero film Thunderbolts is just days away from its theatrical release in India. Ahead of the Thursday release, the film has been granted a ‘UA 13+’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but with a few modifications.
According to a report on Mid-Day, the CBFC has directed the makers to either remove or mute certain swear words, including "a**," "p***k," "d**k," and "b***h." The report further states that the Indian distributors initially discussed with the filmmakers whether they should contest the required changes. However, in doing so, the film would have been given an ‘A’ certificate, thus restricting its audience, particularly teenagers and young fans. "It would also have impacted the film's satellite and digital licensing prospects," a source explained to the portal.
Ultimately, the team decided to comply with the CBFC's directives to ensure a broader release.
At the same time, the film has reportedly secured a similar rating in the US and UK without any cuts or alterations.
Thunderbolts is said to be a grounded, complex and character-driven addition to the MCU which has been subtly laying the groundwork for the team of superheroes over several years, with key setups appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Black Widow, and the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The film follows this group of unlikely heroes as they grapple with old mistakes and learn to lean on each other as they battle forces of darkness within and around them. The upcoming film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Pierce, alongside David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Thunderbolts which is the second MCU film to release in 2025, after Captain America: Brave New World, hits theaters in India on May 1, 2025.
