Kolkata Metro to complete 40 years of service on October 24

Metro Railway, Kolkata is all set to complete 40 years of service on October 24 this year. Starting with a stretch of o­nly 3.4 kms from Esplanade to Bhawanipore (now Netaji Bhavan), the Metro network now spans 58.6 km, and connects different corners of the city. With the launch of Green Line 2 earlier this year, that connects Howrah with Esplanade, thousands of passengers from Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas and of other districts have been travelling under the river Ganges daily. This transformation from under the surface to under the river, both for the first time in the country has made Kolkata Metro a special o­ne in the country. It also happens to be the first underwater metro channel in the country. In future, the authorities promsie to connect the airport, Rajarhat, New Town and many new areas in order to make commuting convenient for all.

To mark this milestone, Metro Railway has released a logo and is conducting various competitions, heritage walks, walkathons, exhibitions and cultural evenings, in order to make it a memorable occasion. Special films have been made where daily commuters to celebrities have shared their views about the convenience and glory of the metro. A special cover and stamp will also be released during these celebrations.
