Beyond the status quo: Does LeBron James have what it takes to match Michael Jordan's aura?

Send Push
When it comes to the NBA , two names tower above the rest: Michael Jordan and LeBron James . Their influence on the game is unparalleled, and their legacies continue to spark heated debates among fans and pundits alike. With a combined haul of championships, MVP awards, and record-breaking performances, the question remains: Who deserves the crown between these two? With their stats, can King James match the aura of Air Jordan?

King James or Air Jordan - We weigh in on the aura debate

Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. With 6 wins in the 6 finals he played in his career, many people consider him to be the GOAT. LeBron James on the other hand, has won 4 NBA championships out of his 10 appearances, with 8 consecutive appearances from 2011 to 2018. With an almost spotless record, MJ does have an edge over Bron, which adds to his aura factor.

But another factor that many have commented on over the years is their career longevity. Jordan, in all his fairness, has played for 13 seasons in the NBA and had two gaps in between where he took time off to recoup and recover. James, on the other hand, is currently tied with Vince Carter as the two players with the longest careers in the NBA, with both having played for 22 seasons.

James though, is potentially going to break this record to become the top name on the leaderboard with the upcoming season, which will mark his 23rd season in the league. His career longevity surely gives him a strong foundation in this debate of who has the stronger aura. And as far as aura is concerned, both are two of the most dominant players, and it's hard to decide on one over the other.

The Stats debate - Michael Jordan vs LeBron James

Michael Jordan has an average of 30.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game in his career, while LeBron James averages 27.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game. Jordan has 5 MVP awards, while James has 4, although both have been named NBA All-Star Game MVP 3 times.

Regarded as one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, Jordan has 9 All-Defensive First Team selections. In comparison, James only has 5. Career-wise, they are pretty well matched, both leading in one category over the other. Which is why, in the NBA, the GOAT debate always ends in chaos - with fans of both players trying to reach the top but not able to surpass each other in all aspects. Their aura also is pretty evenly matched, and for two of the greatest ever to grace the courts of basketball, it’s the fans who are the real winners.
